I Believe in Disneyland
One of my assignments this semester was to create a "This I Believe" speech, inspired by the 1950s radio program. For my essay, I chose to write about celebrating one's life when they pass away, instead of just mourning their loss. This assignment was challenging to me at first, as I had never previously written an essay to record orally. It was, at first, difficult for me to write in a way that made sense when spoken. Once I got over this hurdle, though, this assignment became my favorite one of the year.
I feel that the spoken medium allows for real emotion to be given to the topic, without having nerves take over. Public speaking has never been one of my strengths. While I believe that I have improved greatly in this area over the past year, I still get somewhat flustered before I am to give a speech. This recorded medium, though, allows for the speaker to portray their thoughts with a new voice. Emotion and beliefs don't always come across the right way in written form, but this medium allows for a better understanding of the writer's thoughts. I feel that this piece strongly showcases my beliefs through this form of media.
