Lyndon B. Johnson addressed Congress on March 16, 1965 in order to promote the Voting Rights Act. The essay below examines and analyzes his speech, "We Shall Overcome." It identifies the rhetorical choices made by the writer, and it shows how and why this speech was effective. This piece of writing is one of my stronger pieces from my undergraduate career thus far. It shows that I have the ability to provide an in-depth analysis, while using sources to back up my ideas. In addition, I feel that it showcases my own writing style and voice. This speech was inspiring to me, which led me to analyze the work with meaning. It is my sincerest hope that, in reading this paper, you will gain a better understanding of Johnson's speech, its context, and its rhetoric.
